The Ite Missa Est (Immaculate Conception Adult Faith Formation Ministry) focus for 2018-19 will be an in-depth study and reflection on the Gospel of Luke & The Acts of the Apostles (written by Luke). In five installments, we will enter into the history, theology, and spiritualty of Luke. Ite Missa Est invites you to

Session I – A Glass Half-full: An Introduction to Luke – September 19, 2018. (Fr. Satish Joseph)

After seeking to understanding the author and the audience, we will get a glimpse into Luke’s world-view. How does he understand the relationship between the peoples and cultures of the world?  His view is revealed in his narration of the greatest and most beautiful story every written – the story of Savior of the World! This session will help us fall in love with the gospel of Luke and, more importantly, the one Luke loves – Jesus Christ. All are welcome to this free event. Registration not required.

Session II – The Gospel of Great Reversals – Nov 14, 2018.

Luke’s gospel is the story of the great reversal – where the comfortable and complacent find judgment and the lowly find redemption. As Mary sang in the Magnificat, “He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones but lifted up the lowly. The hungry he has filled with good things; the rich he has sent away empty” (Lk 1:52-53). Real-life stories and parables throughout the gospel emphasize this message. The Great Reversal is seen in the shepherds in the field, Zacchaeus, Lazarus the poor man, the prodigal son and Jesus himself. Luke invites us to be humble so that the redeeming work of Jesus Christ can indeed save us. All are welcome to this free event. Registration not required.

Session III – The Saving Word of God – Jan 16, 2019.

Luke’s story is very simple – God has visited us for our salvation. Luke emphasizes the saving aspects of the Gospel more than any of the other gospels. Salvation takes the form of a person – Jesus Christ. Parables, such as the parable of the lost sheep (15:3-6), the lost coin (15:8-10), and the lost son (15: 11-32) tell us about the saving work of Jesus, the Savior of the world. The Word of God, directed by the Holy Spirit continues this saving mission in Luke’s gospel and his other writing, the Acts of the Apostles. In this session, we will see how the saving works and words of Jesus personally reach out to each one of us. All are welcome to this free event. Registration not required.

Session IV – U Turns Allowed – Feb 20, 2019. (Fr. Satish Joseph)

In the gospel of Luke, the Word of God demands conversion. In his gospel, both John the Baptist who precedes Jesus and the apostles who follow Jesus call for a “turning around.” At times Luke tells us of those who literally “turn around,” like the prodigal son. His most important turn-around story is that of Saul who became Paul in the Acts of the Apostles (also written by Luke). Christian life is a call to a life-long and everyday turning around -- to conversion. Luke invites us to “turn around” and find forgiveness, healing, and redemption. All are welcome to this free event. Registration not required.

Session V – What Then Should We Do? – May 15, 2019. (Fr. Satish Joseph)

People respond to God’s visitation in Luke’s Gospel. These responses took many shapes. One response that we are called to is to produce fruits worthy of repentance (Lk 3:8). God’s faithfulness must be returned with people’s fidelity. Two things characterize this fidelity – obedient hearing of God’s word and imitation of Christ. Through these we see patient endurance, prayer, hospitality to strangers, care of the poor, joy and many other “fruits of repentance”. This last session of the study of the Gospel of Luke, will set us on the path to true Christian Discipleship. All are welcome to this free event. Registration not required.
